Winter 2001 Newsletter
A little background ...Between Us First Aid Kit for Your Heart and Soul is an emotional support tool for women diagnosed with breast cancer. The Between Us First Aid Kit was created by breast cancer survivors as a means to reach out to women immediately after their diagnosis with support and inspiration as they begin their journey through treatment. With the support of breast cancer centers, hospitals, and individuals, Between Us has been distributed to over 5,000 women. It is our goal to reach as many of the 186,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the U.S. as possible. Your support, contributions and assistance in bringing the Between Us Kits to your communities are greatly appreciated. Between Us is a project of Affinityfilms Inc., a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Between Us is distributed to women in a variety of ways. Many physicians offices present a Between Us First Aid Kit to women as they leave the office after learning of their breast cancer diagnosis. Breast cancer support groups offer the Between Us Kits to new members. Many people visit the Between Us website and sponsor a Between Us Kit for friends, family members and co-workers facing a breast cancer diagnosis.

What's New?
New Look for Between Us Website
We are pleased to announce that the Between Us website has been updated and we now have the ability to process orders online. We are also able to accept donations online as well as directly. We invite you to take a look at our new look at http://www.betweenus.org and would love your feedback.
Susie Hipp at www.GetHipp.com worked wonders to help us achieve our new and improved website look. We thank her for her tireless contribution to Between Us.
What's Next?
Between Us to Visit Southwest U.S.
Mary Katzke, Executive Director of Between Us, will be traveling throughout the Southwest United States in February 2001. Mary has presented the Between Us project to hospital boards, hospital auxiliary groups, breast cancer support groups, surgeons, oncology nurses, community groups, therapists and philanthropic groups. This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce Between Us to those in your community who can help to bring Between Us to your hospitals, breast cancer centers, and women facing a breast cancer diagnosis. If you would like be contacted regarding a presentation or screening of the Between Us Project, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your schedule.
Reaching out
Beyond..."Let Me Know How I Can Help"
When offering to help a woman newly diagnosed with breast cancer, make specific suggestions like "I'm going to
the Farmer's Market- can I pick up some fresh veggies for you?" or "I know you love flowers, I'd like to plant a few pots outside your window." or "I'd love to come and visit...I'll bring the refreshments."
Offer optimistic comments like "My grandmother survived breast cancer for almost 35 years...she lived to be 103!" Steer away from stories of women who lost their battles with breast cancer... and if others start them...help to change the subject to something more optimistic!

Recent Distributions
Between Us Reaches Across the U.S.
The St. Luke's Regional Medical Center applied to the Komen Foundation and was granted funding to bring the Between Us Project to Idaho. The next 300 women facing a breast cancer diagnosis in Idaho will have the immediate support of Between Us.
The Alaska Run for Women sponsored a distribution of 200 Between Us First Aid Kits across the state of Alaska. The Alaska Run for Women has sponsored Between Us Kits within Alaska for three years, assuring that a Between Us Kit is available to every woman in Alaska facing a breast cancer diagnosis during these three years. Thank you for your continuing support, Alaska Run for Women.
The Fort Collins Community Cancer Resource Center in Fort Collins, CO has recently been granted funding to sponsor Between Us Kits. We congratulate their efforts in obtaining the funds to make Between Us a reality for the women in their community.
Port Huron Hospital in Port Huron, Michigan continues to provide Between Us First Aid Kits to their newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
The Gulf Breeze Hospital Auxiliary again sponsored Between Us First Aid Kits for the Gulf Breeze Hospital in Gulf Breeze, Florida.
The Carson-Tahoe Cancer Resource Center in Carson City, Nevada sponsored Between Us First Aid Kits for the women who visit their center after a breast cancer diagnosis.
We would like to express our continuing appreciation to the organizations and facilities who sponsor Between Us First Aid Kits for the women in their communities. Without them, we could not continue to grow and make a difference for women facing a breast cancer diagnosis. Many many thanks.
